International Roma Day in Legnica

On 8 April, the International Roma Day celebrations took place in Legnica. Due to the variety of guests, the celebration had a cross-regional character and was attended by: Secretary of State at the Ministry of Interior and Administration Tomasz Siemoniak, Voivode of the Dolnośląskie Voivideship Rafał Jurkowlaniec, President of the Polish Roma Association Roman Chojnacki and the Polish deputy to the International Roma Parliament in Vienna Karol Parno Gierliński.

At the meeting held in the Centre for Vocational Training, attended also by representatives of the Roma community in Legnica, Roma poetry was presented. At the celebrations a concert was given by the traditional gypsy dancing and singing group "Wędrowny Tabor" (Nomadic Camp).

In January 2004 the Municipal Office started to implement a multi-annual programme for Roma community, supported by the Government and local authorities. Actions were taken aiming at enhancing living and health conditions of the Roma population, maintaining its cultural and ethnic identity and creating Roma social group of intellectuals.
