Polish - Italian intergovernmental consultations

On 28 April 2009 the Minister of the Interior and Administration of Poland, Grzegorz Schetyna, and the Minister of the Interior of Italy, Roberto Maroni, met for Polish-Italian intergovernmental consultations. The predominant subject of the meeting was strengthening Police cooperation between public order services of both countries, especially in terms of combating organised crime, illegal manufacture and distribution of counterfeit EURO banknotes, as well as combating human trafficking and slave labour.

Due to reinforced bilateral activity between the two countries and the consequent need for coordinating the cooperation, the Italian side is planning to resume the post of liaison officer in Warsaw which will contribute considerably to better information exchange between the Polish and Italian services.

In addition, the meeting was also an opportunity for discussing the problem of illegal migration: a phenomenon occurring nowadays to a varied extent on the Eastern land border of Poland and on the extensive stretch of the sea border of Italy. The two sides have agreed that common threats call for reinforced security action as well as information exchange when dealing with border management.

Italy’s government delegation visiting Warsaw was led by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi who met Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Meanwhile, ministerial meetings were also attended by Ministries of: the Interior and Administration, Foreign Affairs, Justice, Infrastructure, the Economy, Regional Development and Environment.
