Meeting with the members of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI)

On 23 September 2009 representatives of the Ministry of the Interior and Administration and members of the Joint Commission of the Government and National and Ethnic Minorities met with the representatives the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI): Vigen Kocharyan, Nils Muiznieks and ECRI Executive Secretary Stephanson Stavoros. The meeting was chaired by Tomasz Siemoniak, Secretary of State in the Ministry of the Interior and Administration.

The meeting was a forum for discussion on the efforts by the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, Police, Border Guard and Office for Foreigners to counter racism and intolerance towards different religions, nationalities or ethnic origins.

The issues under discussion included the collaboration between individual ministries and institutions dealing with racism and discrimination (particularly between the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, Police and the Prosecutor’s Office on the problem of racism-driven crimes). Other issues addressed at the meeting concerned: the monitoring of incidents which have their source in racism, xenophobia and discrimination, but also the functioning of the Joint Commission of the Government and National and Ethnic Minorities, the Programme for the Roma minority in Poland, the ongoing work on creating an independent body authorised to investigate complaints about the work and conduct of Police officers and Border Guards, and the integration of foreigners into Polish society.
